DE LA SALLE TODAY 2007

MORE THAN THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS after the birth of John Baptist de La Salle, he is now recognized as a school administrator par excellence. Among the many “roles” he has been identified with are the following: Community Builder (school as community, relationships, human resources development, team building, grievance processing/conflict resolution…). Professional Educator (personal competence, curriculum development, promoting student/faculty/staff development, assessment and evaluation of learning…). Effective Mediator with the Larger Community (relations with marginalized sectors, parents, Church, alumni, other stakeholders…). Institutional Leader (defining mission-vision, strategic planning, curriculum development, management of resources [financial, physical] and environment, managing organizational change…). Person of Significance / Saint (integration of personal development, faith, family and career concerns, witnessing to values…).

But how did this come to be? What were the forces and the circumstances, the opportunities and the challenges De La Salle faced that helped shape his glorious life and this marvelous work? Are they still present among us? If so, how then are we to respond to them the way John Baptist de La Salle did? Is the story of De La Salle still relevant to our own stories? Can we make his “conversion experience” ours, as we enter the 3rd millennium of Christianity?
