LORD, THE WORK IS YOURS

RESIDENCIA LA SALLE
DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY - DASMARIÑAS

LORD, THE WORK IS YOURS

1714 He told Louise about his past and present sufferings and the opposition he had encountered ever since he had undertaken to establish Christian schools. Louise found it all very surprising. She could not get over the fact that such a worthy enterprise, so useful and so necessary, could have met with such opposition in the midst of a Christian country… The holy priest admitted to her that he ardently longed to spend the rest of his days in solitude, which attracted him strongly, so as not to have to think of anything except God and himself. ‘Such is not God’s will,’ replied Louise. ‘You must not abandon the family that God has made you the father of. Labor is your lot; you must persevere in it to the end of your days.’ Blain 2 bk.3 p.123-124

Letter written during an assembly of the principal brothers of Paris, Versailles and St. Denis and sent to De La Salle in Parmenie:

Monsieur, our very dear Father:

We, the principal brothers of the Christian Schools, having in view the greater glory of God, as well as the good of the Church and our society, recognize it to be of the utmost importance that you return to the care and general direction of God’s holy work, which is also your own because it has pleased the Lord to make use of you to establish and guide it for so many years.

We are all convinced that God himself called you and that he has given you the grace and talent necessary for the good government of this new Society so beneficial to the Church. We acknowledge in all justice that you have always guided it with considerable success and edification.

Many are called but few are chosen. Are you convinced that you are chosen to be a Lasallian MINISTER? Do you believe that you have been destined to do God’s work? Can you mention some “gifts, talents” you have received for your ministry as a person in authority? Are you prepared to “minister” to all in need, especially the forgotten, the lost, and rejected within your sphere of influence? Will you be the “good shepherd” to the flock God has confided to your care? How? When?
