THE NEED IS GREAT
We are convinced that if John Baptist de La Salle, canon
of Rheims, stood on the steps of the cathedral today, and
gazed upon our society, he would also be as “deeply
moved” today as he was over three hundred years ago.
He would also see in the hearts of many a searching for the
meaning of life and hunger for justice and solidarity with
one another. Their yearning to experience the love of a God
who wants all to be saved would touch him. But he would also
see the dignity and rights of so many people, young and adults
alike, abused on an interpersonal, national and international
level. He would say what he said then: “God
has had the goodness to remedy so great a misfortune by the
establishment of the Christian Schools…” (MTR.
2:1)
John Baptist de La Salle was deeply moved by the way in which
“the children of the artisans and the poor” were
abandoned and left to themselves. As a practical response
to his prayerful consideration of this fact in relation to
God’s plan of salvation, he came to discern, in faith,
what God wanted the mission of the Institute (our Lasallian
Family) to be… In order to respond to this divine
plan and also to situations of distress similar to those that
the Founder knew, our Lasallian Family desires to be present
to the world today as part of the Church’s work in spreading
the gospel.
Do you feel/believe that the work you do as part of this
family is still greatly needed? Who benefits the most from
the work you do? Which groups or individuals would suffer
the most if you “resign/retire” immediately? Why?
Who else can be helped by your continued presence and contribution
but as yet not reached by your “touch and influence”?
Who would be most grateful that you remain where you are and
continue what you are doing? Name them.
