DLSZ CONDUCTS RELIEF OPERATIONS FOR TYPHOON VICTIMS October 19, 2009
De La Salle Zobel School stands awed and at the same time inspired by the influx of help and support in the form of monetary and in-kind donations, and the selfless rendering of voluntary work from the different sectors of the Lasallian community and from the residents of nearby communities during its Relief Operations for the Victims of Typhoon Ondoy.
As of Oct. 10, 2009, DLSZ has distributed a total of P 4,073,646 worth of goods consisting of rice, noodles, milk packs, bisquits, assorted canned goods, mineral water, Binalot dinners, toiletries, new blankets, new towels, and old clothes to calamity-ridden areas in Muntinlupa, Marikina, Parañaque, Laguna, Taytay, Cainta, Tanay, Marinduque, Pasig, Quezon City, Las Piñas, Cavite and Pandacan, Manila. It has also distributed relief goods to its Maintenance personnel and BRafe Night High School students who have been affected by the floods.Unmindful of their own safety, many volunteers composed of employees, parents, alumni, and high school students went to the affected areas to hand out the relief goods directly to the typhoon victims. Many parents and alumni offered their sturdier vehicles for use in the delivery of goods in flooded areas. Other volunteers stayed in school for hours repacking and loading the goods. Children as young as Junior Prep sorted and folded the donated clothes, and helped the adults put canned goods into the bags. Ms. Feny Alburo, the school’s Lasallian Animator who is nearing 87, came and helped out with the repacking. Teachers and students alike sat and chatted together on the floor as they passed on the bags along the assembly line. As additional sacks and boxes of food items arrived, volunteers clapped vigorously with cheerful shouts of joy unthinking that they would be staying longer with more bags to pack.Typhoon Ondoy may have destroyed homes and displaced families but it failed to crush the spirit of giving among individuals, young and old. Instead, this calamity has awakened and ignited the spirit of “bayanihan”, generosity, and volunteerism among the students, parents, alumni, employees, and even total strangers who never counted the money, time, and efforts they have put in during the Relief Operations. To all those who have, in one way or another, contributed to the success of the DLSZ Relief Operations, our heart-felt THANK YOU! May God return your generosity a thousand fold!Let us continue our efforts in helping the typhoon victims! We are still bringing relief goods to the affected areas. Please send your donations directly to DLSZ. We also plan to hold medical missions and debriefing sessions. To volunteer your services, please contact the Social Action Office at 771-0082 or 771-2354 loc. 568.
